One of the most famous Sicilian red wines , Nero d'Avola comes from the autochthonous Sicilian vine par excellence (whose other name , for the uninitiated, is Calabrian). Noteworthy characteristics make it an esteemed wine used in exceptional combinations in which it is appreciated on the table. From price to grades , let's find out more.
The characteristics of Nero d'Avola wine
Nero d'Avola wine is distinguished by precise characteristics : first of all by the colour, which is ruby red with garnet reflections. On the palate, on the other hand, a fruity aroma (tastes of black cherry, plums) and spicy (leather, carob, licorice, cinnamon) can be perceived above all in young wine. It is full-bodied, full, round and balanced in terms of taste. It has a high alcohol content which is around 15% . The nero d'Avola Cusumano deserves a mention, dark ruby red, it is dry and balanced on the palate and has a slightly almond finish.
Nero d'Avola Syrah
What is Syrah and what is the difference with Nero d'Avola ? Syrah is a black grape variety spread throughout the world but particularly exploited in Sicily, where it is vinified in blends with nero d'Avola . What makes it different from the latter is the fact that wines produced with Syrah , as well as having a good structure, are characterized by an evident aroma of black pepper .
Nero d'Avola, the best pairings
What to combine with Nero d'Avola ? It is perfect with many Sicilian dishes such as anelletti alla palermitana or pasta alla Norma , but also with other dishes featuring aubergines, parmigiana above all. Among the other combinations of Nero d'Avola with food we can mention second courses based on red meat such as braised and roasted meats and grilled white meat. But, surprisingly, it also goes well with tuna steak and sweet and sour tuna . On the other hand, too tasty ingredients should be avoided, first of all very seasoned cheeses that do not go well with the drink.
How to serve Nero d'Avola
The wine should be served at a temperature of 16-18 °C. The glasses to be used are preferably medium-large goblets. It is advisable to open the bottle about 30 minutes before tasting so that, by oxygenating, the flavor and aroma of its aromatic bouquet are appreciable. Excellent and harmonious, one thing is certain: among the famous Sicilian wines, Nero d'Avola deserves a place of honour.
